Top Time Management Tricks from Warren Buffet

You are no stranger to Warren Buffet’s life and fame. The reason for his fame is not just his massive wealth- it’s the life choices he makes in spite of his wealth that capture our attention. Many of us look up to Warren Buffet as a role model for achieving high levels of success (and of course, we admire his wealth too!) But what’s his secret? If we want what he has… how can we attain it?

The secret is time management and perhaps it remains a secret because we always have a limited amount of time on our hands and too many things to do with it. And if you’ve ever been faced with a hectic day- I mean, who hasn’t?- you very quickly learn that how you manage your time affects your happiness, success, and stress levels in a big way. So, how can you manage your time like Warren Buffet and achieve that type of success?

Well, the first step is to recognize your goals and go after them. You want to optimize the usage of time for productive activities and tasks, and to reduce and even possibly eliminate time-wasting tasks. Or you want to at least identify them so you can delegate them. For this, you need to learn how to manage time in a busy schedule that best maximizes your potential output, and completing your tasks well within the deadline.

According to research by Brigitte J. C. Claessens and others of the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 2007, time management is an important concept and concern but it is even more important to invest in the process that involves determining the best possible usage of our time.

In simple words, the more closely we analyze our time usage, the better we are able to apply optimization techniques to maximize output.

Dirk Zeller, American investor, coach, speaker, and the author for more than 20 years, expands this idea in his book ‘Successful Time Management for Dummies’. Zeller strongly recommends developing a personal system of time management. He stresses the importance of creating a personal time management system that works for each individual.

In her 2008 book Lisa J Downs’ take this idea forward and outlines four important aspects of creating a personal time management system. These are :

  1. Setting priorities
  2. Analyzing
  3. Filtering
  4. Scheduling and executing.

For those of you who do, and even those who do not already emulate him, Warren Buffet has one shocking tip for time management, that effectively sums up all of the above. In a 2017 conversation with his billionaire friend Bill Gates, “The Oracle of Omaha,” Buffet revealed how he values time over and above anything else money could buy. Speaking of time, Buffet explained, “It is the only thing you cannot buy.” But we all know that already, right? It’s hardly a shocking revelation. So, why is it significant?

Well, it matters because Gates went on to reveal that the best lesson that he ever got from Buffet was “Give yourself time to think.” He even shared how he actually saw Buffet’s nearly empty calendar and realized that Gates’ own calendar was chock a block, giving him hardly any leisure for reflection.

Just a simpler version of the conclusions of years of research is – give yourself time to think. Reflection is the key to better time management. When you reconsider the four steps suggested by Lisa Downs, you will see that they all relate to the same simple mental exercise – Reflection.

To break down Buffets advice into actionable steps just take Lisa.J.Downs’ components and include them into your routine for learning How to manage your time in a busy schedule :

 

  1. Setting priorities: Mark your goals. Accordingly, pick activities that are going to further your progress on those goals, and those that are not.
  2. Analyzing: Examine the duration and intensity of work that each such task requires. Identify the core tasks and separate them from tasks and activities that you could delegate or outsource, or simply avoid altogether.
  3. Filtering: Make a list of counterproductive activities and tasks. Some of these will be essentials such as spending time looking after yourself and your family, making social calls or time wasted in dealing with avoidable emergencies. Have specific time frames, and systems in place to deal with such time-consuming activities. Have contingency plans for unseen situations. This will save you trouble and time if such a situation should arise.

Avoid non-essential activities by reminding yourself that they are taking you away and not towards your goal.

  1. Scheduling and executing: Based on your own natural rhythm and the need of the goal, divide your days, weeks, months and the coming year into chunks of time, blocked for those priority tasks. Execute the tasks in the scheduled slots.

This is just a broad idea of how to apply the time management tip from Warren Buffet. It is up to you to develop your own system and refine it over time.

You might not get it right the very first time and you might also see the room for improvement and modification as you go along.

The important thing is to begin to “give yourself time to think“. Once you get into the habit of regularly reflecting and planning how to best use your time, you will begin to see the benefits. You will begin to have more time for useful activities and less of a backlog of pending or undone tasks.
